The Social Justice Commission seeks to bring to all believers an awareness of public issues that impede the dignity of some of God’s children. The group advocates for “the least of these” by encouraging all to examine their faith and asks themselves “what would Jesus do?” The purpose of this group is to help others become aware of injustices faced by others and become emboldened to help change happen. One emphasis in 2006-2007 was supporting, along with St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church and First Parish Unitarian Church, the Refugee Immigration Ministries program by aiding a political refugee family from Algeria who moved to Sudbury for a year. Support was both financial and providing rides and social interaction opportunities. The Commission also dealt with issues of homelessness, affordable housing, and global warming. It sponsored a “Make a House a Home” project, donating furnishings and money to the Pine Street Inn. It also worked with the Concord-Acton Family Homelessness Advocacy Network. The Commission arranged by the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” to be shown followed by a discussion about global warming. |
